  The Critical Language Projects support Teachers of Critical Languages Program (TCLP) alumni and institutions with funding for projects that enhance Mandarin and Arabic learning programs in the United States as well as the teaching of English as a Foreign Language in the home countries of international alumni. These projects may range from $500 to $3,000 and are designed to complement TCLP goals by providing funding for alumni activities that increase capacity building and collaborative ideas for teaching and classroom projects. Critical Language Project grants promote mutual understanding and productive and lasting relationships between program alumni in the U.S., China, and Egypt.

  The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State is pleased to announce support for Critical Language Projects to assist Teachers of Critical Languages Program (TCLP) alumni and institutions in promoting mutual understanding with projects that enhance critical language learning programs in the United States as well as the teaching of English, Chinese or Arabic as a Foreign Language in the home countries of international alumni.

  Funding is available for the following types of projects: school partnerships and joint-classroom projects; sharing of innovative teaching methods, best practices and/or comparative methodologies; developing curricula and supporting the exchange of authentic materials for communicative needs; strengthening respect and appreciation for educators; professional development workshops on language teaching/learning methodology conducted by a TCLP host school representative and TCLP international teachers/alumni; and establishment of language clubs or school newsletters for the teaching/learning of EFL, Arabic or Chinese.
  
  TCLP Critical Language Projects may be proposed by exchange teachers, alumni, U.S. mentor teachers, or U.S. host schools and districts. Projects should:
  
  1) Maintain contact or expand the relationship between TCLP alumni and the schools at which they have taught as a teacher of critical need languages; and
  2) Contribute to the development of critical need language programs in U.S., Chinese or Egyptian schools in order to support of the goal of increasing the number of students learning these foreign languages, and/or educators learning about the teaching of English, Chinese or Arabic.
• TCLP Professional Development Fund [75.50 KB DOC]
  
  The Teachers of Critical Languages Program allocates $400 in professional development funds to its exchange teachers so they can have access to teaching resources, classroom improvement materials, and professional development opportunities. This Professional Development Fund is separate from participants’ monthly stipends. While the stipend is designed to cover participants’ monthly expenses, the Professional Development Fund is specifically designed to support exchange teachers’ classroom teaching and professional development.
