Sustainability
American Councils’ vision is to Empower individuals and institutions to address challenges in a diverse and interconnected world. We accomplish this through programming and projects that offer transformative opportunities for participants and create connections that positively impact the world. Our work, including the reliance on air travel, energy consumption in our offices, and the generation of waste, among others, however may create environmental issues that we should address.
American Councils is dedicated to reducing our environmental impact and strives to implement sustainable practices. We actively assess our carbon footprint and pursue meaningful changes that make a difference in all the countries where we operate, as well as where our participants live and work. Our commitment to environmental responsibility is a key part of our broader mission to create a better-connected and more sustainable world. Our efforts include:
- Examining and raising awareness about the environmental impact of our activities;
- Empowering stakeholders including participants, partners, staff, and host communities to make individual and collective choices informed by environmentally sustainable best practices.
- Integrating environmentally sustainable best practices into organizational culture and daily operations such as partnering with providers who support such efforts, e.g. maintaining headquarters in a LEED-certified building;
- Preventing, reducing, and, when possible, mitigating environmental impacts of our work.
Change occurs through sustained efforts by both organizations and individuals. In addition to American Councils’ efforts, we encourage participants to learn about their impact on the environment and ability to practice greater environmental sustainability including in their home and host communities.
